TINNITUS TREATMENT - LAKE CHARLES LA - ORANGE, TX

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the phenomenon of hearing sound, or a ringing in your ears (or head) when an external environmental sound is not present. Tinnitus affects roughly 1/5 of the population; If you’re experiencing symptoms of Tinnitus, you’re not alone.

Most patients describe the effect of Tinnitus as a ringing in the ear; it has also been described as a hissing, whistling, or buzzing sound. However, the extent and symptoms of Tinnitus vary from patient to patient, as well as the harm tinnitus causes.

While Tinnitus is not considered a condition or a disease, it may be attributed to an underlying condition, including ear infection, high blood pressure, or the onset of hearing loss.

Symptoms of Tinnitus can come and go without a definitive ending, which is why it is important you speak with a hearing specialist about your Tinnitus experience.

Tinnitus FAQs

What is tinnitus, medically speaking?
Tinnitus is the experience of hearing a sound—often described as ringing, buzzing, humming, or whooshing—when no external sound is present. It isn’t a disease on its own. Instead, it’s a symptom that something is affecting the hearing system, such as age-related changes, noise exposure, earwax, circulation issues, or other medical conditions.

Does tinnitus cause hearing loss?
Tinnitus doesn’t cause hearing loss, but it often goes hand-in-hand with it. Many people notice tinnitus as their hearing changes over time. Others develop symptoms after years of loud noise exposure, work-related noise, or recreational activities like hunting, concerts, or using power tools.

Is tinnitus harmful or considered a disability?
Most tinnitus isn’t dangerous, but it can absolutely affect quality of life. For some people, it becomes distracting enough to interfere with concentration, work, sleep, or emotional well-being. When that happens, professional support can make a huge difference.

Why is my tinnitus worse at night?
Tinnitus tends to feel louder at night because the world around you gets quieter. During the day, everyday sounds—conversation, traffic, TV, nature noise—help mask the internal ringing. Once the house quiets down, that background “buffer” disappears, making tinnitus more noticeable.

Can tinnitus be cured?
Right now, there isn’t a universal cure for chronic tinnitus. However, many people learn how to reduce its impact through the right combination of care, tools, and lifestyle changes. The goal is to make tinnitus less intrusive so you can sleep better, concentrate easier, and feel more in control.

What treatments are available for tinnitus?
Tinnitus management looks different for everyone, but common options include:

Hearing aids
For people with hearing loss, hearing aids are often the most helpful option. They bring in more external sound, which naturally reduces the contrast between silence and the internal ringing.

Sound therapy or masking
White noise machines, fans, calming nature sounds, or small wearable devices can help drown out the internal noise—especially at bedtime.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)
This combines education, counseling, and steady sound exposure to help your brain pay less attention to tinnitus over time.

Counseling and mind-body techniques
CBT, relaxation training, deep breathing, yoga, and similar practices can help calm the stress response that makes tinnitus feel louder.

Medication
There’s no medication that directly cures tinnitus, but certain prescriptions may be used off-label to improve sleep, reduce anxiety, or help with mood changes related to tinnitus.

Are there any proven medications or home remedies?
Be cautious with “miracle cures” you see online. Most supplements and remedies lack solid research, and some can even interact with your medications. If you're considering trying something new, it’s best to run it by a hearing professional or healthcare provider first.

Can lifestyle changes help reduce tinnitus?
Yes. Stress, diet, and daily habits can all affect tinnitus. Many people notice improvement when they:
• reduce stress
• limit alcohol, caffeine, and salt
• get consistent sleep
• protect their ears from loud noise
• stay active with regular exercise
Small changes can make day-to-day symptoms much easier to manage.

What are the newest treatments for tinnitus?
One of the most promising new options is bimodal neuromodulation, such as the FDA-approved Lenire device. It pairs gentle sound therapy with mild tongue stimulation to retrain the brain’s response to tinnitus. Early results are encouraging, especially for people with persistent, bothersome symptoms.

Is there research toward a cure?
Yes, research is ongoing. Scientists are studying ways to regenerate inner ear hair cells, quiet inflammation in the auditory pathway, and develop medications—like SPI-1005—that may one day offer more direct treatment options. While nothing is available as a cure yet, the field is evolving quickly.

When should I see a professional?
If you’re noticing new tinnitus, worsening symptoms, or it’s starting to affect daily life, it’s a good idea to seek professional treatment. Proper evaluation can identify what’s causing the tinnitus and which treatment options are the best fit for you.
